Wilderness Road. a historic, rough trail blazed by Daniel Boone in 1775.
Articles of Confederation. The first constitution of the United States, establishing a weak central government that could not effectively tax or regulate commerce, leading to a need for a stronger federal system.
Land Ordinance of 1785 A law that established a systematic process for surveying, dividing, and selling land in the Northwest Territory into townships and sections to generate revenue and promote settlement.
Northwest Territory. The area of land northwest of the Ohio River, east of the Mississippi River, and south of the Great Lakes, which was organized and governed by the U.S. government under the Articles of Confederation.
Northwest Ordinance A significant law that established the process by which new territories could become states, prohibited slavery in the Northwest Territory, and guaranteed basic rights and public education.
Shays’s Rebellion An armed uprising by Massachusetts farmers in 1786 and 1787 against debt collection and property taxes
