| Fossil | The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past |
| Evolution | Change over time; the process in which organisms have descended from ancient organisms |
| Variation | Any difference between individuals of the same species |
| Mechanism | The natural process by which something takes place |
| Commpetition | The struggle between organisms to survive using the same limited resources |
| Sexual Selection | The type of natural selection that acts on an organisms ability to get the best possible mate |
| Coevolution | The process by which species evolve in response to each other |
| Fossil Record | All of the fossils that have been discovered an what scientists have learned from them |
| Species | A group of similar organisms that can mate and produce offspring that that can mate and reproduce |
| Adaptation | An inherited behavior or a physical characteristic that helps an organism survive and reproduce in their environment |
| Scientific Theory | A well tested explanation for a wide range of observations |
| Natural Selection | A process by which organisms that are best adapted to the environment are most likely to survive and reproduce |
| Fitness | How well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment |
| Homologous Structure | Structures that are similar in different species and that have been inherited from a common ancestor |
| Extinct | Term used to refer to a group of related organisms that has died out and there are no living left |
