pH Vocabulary
common vocabulary words that are used when discussing pH
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| pH | A scale used to measure how acidic or basic a solution is, ranging from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic), with 7 being neutral. |
| Acid | A substance that donates hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution, resulting in a pH less than 7. |
| Base | A substance that accepts hydrogen ions or donates hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in a solution, resulting in a pH greater than 7. |
| Neutralization | A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react to form water and a salt, often resulting in a neutral pH of 7. |
| Indicator | A chemical compound that changes color in response to changes in pH, used to determine the acidity or basicity of a solution. |
| Hydrogen (H⁺) or Hydronium Ion | The ion formed when a hydrogen ion (H⁺) attaches to a water molecule (H₂O), represented as H₃O⁺, which indicates acidity. |
| OH⁻ or Hydroxide Ion | A negatively charged ion (OH⁻) that indicates basicity in a solution. |
| Buffer | A solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added, helping to maintain a stable environment. |
