QuestionAnswer
Gregor mendel the father of genetics. he studied inhereiteance of specific traits in pea plants.
law of dominance in a cross between 2 contrasting traits (ex; tall and short plants), only one of those appears in the offspring. The trait that shows up in the DOMINANT trait and the trait that doesn't show up is the RECESSIVE trait.
A key used to show alleles Capital letter = dominant allele and lower case = RECESSIVE allele.
genotype refers to genetic makeup of an individual ; represented by letters for each trait. EX:TT or Tt or tt
pure homozygous both alleles for a trait are the same. EX: TT = pure tall/homozygous tall (dominant) OR TT = pure short/recessive
hybrid/heterozygous 2 alleles for a trait different. EX: Tt = hybrid tall
Phenotype refers to observable/physical characteristics or traits of an individual. EX: looks tall
Examples of Medels law of dominance Cross 1 pure tall and 1 homozygous short plant (TRY ON PAPER!!) Answers on paper Cross 2 hyrbid/heterozygous tall plants
Law of segregation (and recombination) During gamete formation, the 2 genes/alleles responsible for each trait seperate from each other; each gamete contains only 1 gene/allele for each trait. EX: on paper
Law of independent Assortment if 2 traits are crossed at the same time (Dihybrid cross), each trait is inherited independent of each other, or by themselves.
Test Cross to determine the genotype of an unknown individual, cross it with a pure/homozygous recessive individual. EX: on paper!!
Other (Nonn mendelian) Laws of inheritance= incomplete dominance 1) In some cases, one allele is only partly dominant over the recessive allele. 2) The hybrid/heterozygous phenotype is an intermediate between the dominant and the recessive allele. EX: on paper!!
Name all 3 of Mendels Laws of Inheritance 1)law of dominance 2)Law of segregation (and recombination) 3)Law of independent Assortment
codominance in some cases, both alleles are equally dominant. The heterozygous individual has both alleles fully expressed at the same time. EX on paper
sex determination in diploid cells, there are 23 homologous chromosomes pairs. 22 pairs are autosomes and 1 is a sex chromosome.EX on paper
sex linkage x chromosome carry some genes that don't have alleles on y chromsomes. Ex is hemophilia look on PAPER

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
