Geologic Change

TermDefinition
Uniformitarianism A principle that geologic processes that occurred in the past can be explained by current geologic processes
Trace Fossil A fossilized structure such as a footprint or a coprolite that formed in sedimentary rock by animal activity on or within soft sediment
Fossil The trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock
Climate The weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
Ice core A long cylinder of ice obtained from drilling through ice caps of ice sheets, used to study past climates
How old is Earth 4.6 billion years old
Climate changes climate can over time on different parts of the Earth
Life changes on Earth Life can change on Earth
Fossils are mostly found in what type of rock Sedimentary Rock
Some animals have been found almost completely preserved by being frozen in what Permafrost or ice
Mold An imprint of some part of an organism left in sediment. When the sediment hardens into rock a fossil forms.
Relative Dating Determining whether an object is the same age as, older than, or younger than another object is called relative dating.
Superposition Sediment is deposited in horizontal layer on top of older rock or sediment
Law of Cross Cutting Fault or body of rock must be younger than any feature or layer of rock that the fault or rock body cuts into
Unconformity A break in geologic record that happens when rock layers are eroded or are not deposited for a long period of time.
Isotopes Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Atoms Smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of the element
Stable atom Protons and neutrons are equal - know as the daughter
Unstable atom Different number of protons and neutrons - know as the parents
Radioactivity (radioactive decay) Process where radioactive isotopes tend to break down into stable isotopes
Half life Certain length of time after which half of the amount of radioactive element has decayed
Carbon-13 5730 years for half of carbon-13 to decay
Types of radiometric dating Potassium-Argon Method, Uranium-Lead Method, Rubidium-Strontium Method, Carbon-14 Method

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
