Use this Study Stack to help review the terms of Math 7 Unit 6!
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| expression | a mathematical symbol, or combination of symbols, representing a value, or relation. Ex: 2x + 5 |
| equation | a mathematical statement that says two expressions have the same value; any number sentence with an =. Ex: 2x +5 = 8 |
| variable | a letter used to represent a number value in an expression or an equation. Ex: y is the variable in 5y |
| coefficient | a constant that multiplies a variable. Ex: 5 is the coefficient in 5y |
| constant | a fixed value that does not change. Ex: -3 |
| term | any expression written as a product or quotient (no plus or minus signs!). Ex: 2xy, 5, 2/m |
| like terms | terms that have the same variable raised to the same exponent: Ex: 3x to the power of 2 and -2x to the power of 2 |
| commutative property | the orders of numbers in a calculation (with addition or multiplication) does not affect the result: Ex: 5 (4) = 4 (5) |
| associative property | when performing an operation on three or more numbers, the result is unchanged by the way the numbers are grouped. Switch the group! Ex: 1 + (2+3) = (1+2) + 3 |
| additive inverse | the additive inverse of any number x is the number that gives zero when added to x. Ex: 5 and -5 |
| multiplicative inverse | the reciprocal of a number. Ex: 2 and 1/2 |
