| alliteration | the repetition of the same sound at the starts of words or phrases that are close together. Example:"Bill brought blueberries" is an example of a sound device called alliteration because each word starts with the same sound. |
| figurative language | language that means something other than its literal meaning and expresses ideas in vivid ways. |
| free verse | poetry that does not rhyme or follow a regular meter. |
| metaphor | a figure of speech that compares two different things without the words "like" or "as." |
| onomatopoeia | words or the use of words with sounds that imitate the meaning of what they are describing, i.e. "boom" or "splash." |
| poem | a piece of writing that stands out based on its use of language, form, rhythm, etc. This type of writing can be short or long and may rhyme |
| prose | the ordinary form of writing or speech; writing that is not poetry |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes in a poem or song, usually at the ends of lines.Sometimes indicated by letters that show which lines rhyme, like abab. |
| simile | a figure of speech that compares two things using "like" or "as." "She entered the room as quietly as a mouse" is an example. |
| sound device | a tool that poets use to add meaning through sound. |
