Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) portion of the stomach removed, leaves banana shaped pouch. this restricts amount of intake and reduces ghrelin production, which decreases appetite
Adjustable gastric banding laparoscopic procedure, inflatable band around the fundus of the stomach. band is inflated and deflated via port to change the size as pt loses weight
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) limits stomach size, the duodenum and part of the jejunum are bypassed to limit absorption of calories
Biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch creates a more tubular gastric "sleeve" with a connection to a small part of the duodenum
Complications of RYGB danger of leaking stomach contents into abdomen early post op, later, gastric stretching may cause staple line to break, or band may erode into the stomach over time and leak, and dumping syndrome
dumping syndrome signs nausea, weakness, sweating, diarrhea
all bariatric surgery pts are at risk of nutritional deficiencies
RYGB are most likely to develop deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12, calcium, folate. supplements must be taken for life
