Science 7 Unit 5

Use this Study Stack to help review the terms of Science 7 Unit 5!

TermDefinition
Mixtures Two or more substances that are in the same place but are not chemically combined
Homogeneous A mixture that is the same throughout (uniform/ evenly mixed) ex: Sugar water
Heterogeneous A mixture that is different throughout (random/ unevenly mixed) ex: raisin water
Filtration the process in which large particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter. Ex: Sand and water - the sand gets trapped in the filter paper while the water passes through.
Magnetism is a force that can attract or repel certain materials. Objects made of iron, nickel, cobalt, or steel are attracted to magnets. Iron fillings and sand- the sand gets trapped in the filter paper while the water passes through.
Evaporation the process where a liquid changes into a gas. This process can be used to separate mixtures because the liquid evaporates, leaving the solid behind. Ex: Sugar Water- when the water evaporates, sugar crystals remain.
Sieving a method used to separate mixtures based on the size of the particles. A sieve has small holes that allow smaller particles to pass through while larger particles stay on top. Sand and pebbles- the sand falls through the sieve; the pebbles stay behind.
solution a type of mixture that has the same properties (homogeneous) throughout and the particles are to small to see. (dissolved)
solute is present in smaller amounts, gets dissolved Example: salt
solvent is the present in larger amounts, does the dissolving Example: water
colloid a type of mixture with small, undissolved particles that will not settle ex: milk, gelatin, fog
suspension a type of mixture with the particles that can be seen easily and will settle over time or can be filtered (They will show the Tyndall Effect)
Tyndall Effect The particles are too small to be seen but can be scattered by a light beam. This is known as the Tyndall Effect.
dilute solution a mixture that has only a small amount of solute dissolved in a certain amount of solvent
concentrated solution a mixture that has a larger amount of solute dissolved in the solvent
solubility The measure of how much solute can dissolve at a give temperature
Saturated solution is when NO MORE SOLUTE can be dissolved in a solvent (this is the perfect amount of solute dissolved in the solvent)
Unsaturated solution when MORE SOLUTE can be dissolved in a solvent
Supersaturated solution a solution containing MORE SOLUTE THEN IS POSSIBLE to dissolve (usually caused by super heating the solvent.)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
