| Mantle | A thin layer of tissue that secretes the shell |
| Foot | A ventral muscular foot that is usually used on locomotion |
| Radula | A ribbon of small teeth that is used to feed usually by rasping food from surfaces |
| Chitin | A highly resistant carbohydrate also found in other invertebrates |
| Valves | a body enclosed in a shell with two parts |
| Umbo | The upper hump near the hinge of each shell |
| Siphons | Allows clams to feed and obtain oxygen while buried in sediment |
| Byssal Threads | helps attach mussels to rocks and other surfaces |
| Bio-fouling | an undesirable accumulations of organisms that settle on the bottom of boats, pilings, and other submerged structures |
| Ink Sac | a cloud of dark fluid produced by ink sacs to distract potential predators |
| Pen | a pen is embedded in the upper surface of the mantle |
| Crystalline style | an enzyme-secreting rod in the stomach |
| Open circulatory system | where blood flows out of vessels into open blood spaces |
| Ganglia | clusters of nerve cells located in different parts of the body |
| Spermatophores | elongated packets of sperms |
| Veliger | a planktonic larva that has a tiny shell |
