Add and Subtract Fractions

TermDefinition
Mixed Number A number containing a whole number and a proper fraction
Distance How much space is between two things
Difference The distance between two numbers; can be found using subtraction
Sum The total of two or more numbers added together
Model A representation of something
Improper Fraction A fraction that represents a value greater than one whole
Subtraction Taking away an amount from a larger amount; finding the difference between two numbers
Addition Combining two or more numbers to get a total
Numerator The top number in a fraction that shows how many parts of the whole there are
Denominator The bottom number of a fraction that shows the number of equal parts in one whole
Fraction A number that shows a part of a whole or part of a set
Strip Diagram A model used to solve word problems that shows the relationship between known and unknown amounts
Operations Math processes, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Number Line A line with numerical values placed in the correct order showing the distance between numbers
Estimate A reasonable guess that is close to the right answer
