| mantle | A thin layer of tissue that secretes the shell. |
| foot | Usually used in locomotion |
| radula | a ribbon of small teeth that us used to fee, usually by rasping food from surfaces |
| chitin | a highly resistant carbohydrate also found in other invertebrates |
| umbo | the upper hump near the hinge of each shell, is the oldest part of the shell |
| siphons | formed by fusion of the edge of the mantle and this allows clams clams to feed and obtain oxygen while buried in sediment. |
| bysal threads | that attach them too rocks and other surfaces. |
| biofouling | the undesirable accumulation of organisms that settle on the bottoms of boat, piling, and other submerged |
| ink sac | produces a cloud of dark fluid |
| pen | embedded in the upper surface of the mantle. Shell is reduced to this |
| crystalline style | an enzyme secreting rod in the stomach and continually rotates food to help in its digestion |
| open circulatory system | a system were blood flows out of vessels into open blood space. |
| ganglion | cluster of nerve cells located in different parts of the body |
| spermatophores | elongated packets of sperm, to the female. |
| veliger | a planktonic larva that has a tiny shell |
| valves | enclosed in a shell with two parts. |
