Poetry Elements

Terms used to describe or identify the components of poetry

TermDefinition
Imagery Uses vivid language that appeals to the senses
Repetition Repeats words or phrases for emphasis
Tone The speaker’s attitude toward the subject
Tone Shift A noticeable change in mood or attitude
Line A single row of words in a poem; may or may not be a complete sentence
Stanza A group of lines in a poem that belong together, similar to a paragraph
Simile A comparison using “like” or “as”
Metaphor A comparison without using “like” or “as”
Personification Giving human qualities to nonhuman things
Theme The central message, lesson, or idea about life or human experience that is communicated through the text
Speaker The voice that is speaking in a poem or text
Meaning What the author/speaker of a text communicates or suggests to the reader
Technique A method or tool an author uses to create meaning and achieve a specific effect in a text
