Poetry Elements
Terms used to describe or identify the components of poetry
| Term | Definition |

| Imagery | Uses vivid language that appeals to the senses |
| Repetition | Repeats words or phrases for emphasis |
| Tone | The speaker’s attitude toward the subject |
| Tone Shift | A noticeable change in mood or attitude |
| Line | A single row of words in a poem; may or may not be a complete sentence |
| Stanza | A group of lines in a poem that belong together, similar to a paragraph |
| Simile | A comparison using “like” or “as” |
| Metaphor | A comparison without using “like” or “as” |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to nonhuman things |
| Theme | The central message, lesson, or idea about life or human experience that is communicated through the text |
| Speaker | The voice that is speaking in a poem or text |
| Meaning | What the author/speaker of a text communicates or suggests to the reader |
| Technique | A method or tool an author uses to create meaning and achieve a specific effect in a text |
