QuestionAnswer
Trait a quality that makes one person, animal, or thing different from another.
Variation differences in traits among individuals within a population.
Adaptation A physical feature or behavior that helps an organism survive in its environment.
Acquired Trait characteristic an organism develops during its lifetime; not inherited
Survival of the Fittest organisms best suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Natural Selection Organisms that are better suited for their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Fitness the ability of an organism to survive and pass on its genes to the next generation.
Evolution the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations.
Comparative Anatomy the study of similarities and differences in the body structures of different organisms.
Geographic Distribution where different organisms are found around the world.
Embryology the study of how living things develop from a fertilized egg into a fully formed organism.
Vestigial Organ body part that no longer has an important function.
Homologous Structures body parts in different organisms that are similar because they come from a common ancestor.
Gene Pool all the genes in a population.
Allele Frequency how often a specific allele appears in a population.
Punctuated Equilibrum the idea that evolution happens in short, rapid bursts, with long periods of little change in between.
Gradualism the idea that evolution happens slowly over a long time.
Divergent Evolution when two related species become more different over time.
Convergent Evolution when unrelated species develop similar traits because they live in similar environments.
Co-evolution when two species evolve in response to each other.
Genetic Drift a change in a population’s genes due to chance, NOT natural selection.
