TermDefinition
Agora A gathering place; marketplace in ancient Greece
City-state A city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state
Colony A group of people living in a new territory who have ties to their homeland; a new territory
Democracy Government by the people
Direct Democracy A form of government in which all citizens can participate in the decision making process
Oligarchy A government ruled by a few powerful individuals
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on three sides
Polis A Greek city-state
Tyranny A government in which the ruler takes power by force and rules with unfair control over the people
Civic Relating a citizen, a city, citizenship, or community affairs Example: civic duty
Indirect Democracy (Representative) A form of government in which citizens elect officials who administer the policies
Citizen A member of a nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection
Acropolis A fortified hilltop in an ancient Greek city
Fleet A group of ships sailing together
Conquest The act of taking control of a place through the use of force
Aristocrat A member of an upper class society, usually made up of hereditary nobility (wealth)
Mythology A set of stories, traditions, or beliefs that are believed by many but that are not true
Hellenistic Relating to Greek culture (Greek like)
