| cardinal directions | the four principal compass points of north, south, east and west |
| compass rose | a map tool that helps you determine cardinal and intermediate directions |
| human characteristics | things that people have added to a place. (i.e. towns, roads, buildings, city/state borders) |
| physical characteristics | natural parts of the land (i.e. rivers, lakes, mountains) |
| map scale | a tool used to approximate or estimate the distance between places on a map |
| relative location | a location of a place in relation to another place |
| intermediate directions | the directions on the compass that are halfway between the cardinal points, and are called northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest |
