| slave | a person held captive and forced to work without pay |
| plantation | a large farm, usually in a warm climate, on which many workers, servants, or slaves live and work |
| abolish | to end or prohibit by law |
| states' rights | the rights and powers held by the state governments, rather than the federal government |
| abolitionist | someone who wanted to end slavery |
| Underground Railroad | a system of secret routes used by free people in the North and South that helped enslaved people escape to freedom |
| fugitive | a person who has escaped from a place or who is hiding to avoid capture or arrest |
| Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 | a law that allowed slave-catchers to enter the North in pursuit of fugitive slaves |
| agriculture | the science, art, and business of cultivating soil, producing crops, and raising livestock; farming |
| conductor | a brave person who safely guided freedom seekers (people escaping slavery) along a secret path to safety in the North or Canada |
| station (safe house) | a secret place where people escaping slavery could hide, rest, and find food, supplies, and money on their journey to freedom. |
