QuestionAnswer
Centromere The constricted region of a chromosome that holds sister chromatids together and anchors the kinetochore.
Sister Chromatids Two identical copies of a chromosome connected at the centromere.
Kinetochore A protein structure on the centromere where spindle fibers attach during cell division.
Spindle Fibers Microtubules that pull chromatids apart during mitosis and meiosis.
Short Arm (p) The shorter chromosome arm above the centromere.
Long Arm (q) The longer chromosome arm below the centromere.
C (Chromatids) in the CENTRAL mnemonic The centromere keeps the two identical DNA copies attached until they separate.
E (Equal division) in the CENTRAL mnemonic The centromere helps ensure chromosomes are divided evenly between daughter cells.
N (Nucleus checkpoint) in the CENTRAL mnemonic This refers to the checkpoint that confirms spindle fibers are attached correctly.
T (Tethering) in the CENTRAL mnemonic This refers to the point where microtubules attach to move chromosomes.
R (Region of constriction) in the CENTRAL mnemonic This refers to the narrow waist-like area at the center of the chromosome.
A (Arms p and q) in the CENTRAL mnemonic This refers to how the centromere divides the chromosome into an upper and lower arm.
L (Location of kinetochore) in the CENTRAL mnemonic This refers to the site where a protein structure forms to anchor spindle fibers.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
