U5 Early Middle Ages

TermDefinition
Middle Ages A period that lasted from about 500 to about 1500.
Monks Religious men who lived apart from society in isolated communities Monks spent most of their time in prayer, work, study, and meditation.
Vassal A knight (or lord) who promised to support a lord in exchange for land in medieval Europe
Feudalism the system of obligations that governed the relationships between lords and vassals in medieval Europe
Manor The large estate owned by a knight or lord
Serfs Workers who were tied to the land on which they lived
Islam A religion based on the messages Mohammad is believed to have received from God.
Charlemagne King of the Franks, he was a brilliant warrior and strong leader. He was crowned Emperor of the Romans in 800.
Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne the Holy Roman Emperor in order to gain protection from the powerful king and spread Christianity into Europe
Pope Leo IX believed that the Pope should be the head of the entire Christian Church. This caused a division in the Christian Church known as the “Great Schism”.
Henry IV Holy Roman Emperor who thought Popes had too much power. He was excommunicated and allowed back into the church when he begged for forgiveness.
Pope Gregory VII thought Popes should have the power to choose bishops. He believed Popes got their power from God.
