Data Collection and Processing

QuestionAnswer
Random error error that is above and below true value, usually due to limitations of equipment
Systematic error error that is consistently in one direction, usually due to instrument or method error
Precision a measure of the certainty (±)
Accuracy how close the value is to the accepted value
Absolute uncertainty the ± value in a reading
Percentage uncertainty the ± value in a reading divided by the reading x 100%
Absolute error measured value less accepted value
Percentage error measured value less accepted value all divided by accepted value
Anomaly an unexpected result, possibly unexpected trend, needs explanation
Outlier an unexpected result, significant percentage difference, needs removing and justifying
Validity Is the experiment testing for what the RQ is saying it is testing for
Reliability Can you reproduce the same results using the method given
Positive control Tests the experiment works when it is meant to work - all instruments and reagents etc are OK
Negative control Tests the experiment fails when it is meant to fail - no unexpected factors present
