Plot Elements

QuestionAnswer
man vs. self example of internal conflict
Part of the plot in which the reader is given important background information about the characters and setting exposition
First event that sets the plot in motion and introduces the conflict inciting incident
Problem or struggle between opposing forces. conflict
External Conflict Exists between a character and an outside force.
Examples of external conflict man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society
Exists within the mind of a character, such as when one has to make a difficult decision or is dealing with a personal problem. internal conflict
Sequence of events in a work of literature. plot
Rising action The series of events that begin to occur as soon as the conflict is introduced.
Turning point, moment of greatest tension climax
Tension is decreasing, loose ends are being tied up, and conflict is being resolved falling action
The conflict and the climax have been fully resolved. resolution
