MED239 Chapter 5-6

QuestionAnswer
electrical impulses that originate in the atria and initiate an early impulse that interrupts the regular rhythm. PACs
electrical impulse(s) that come from outside the normal pacemaker site or electrical condition pathway Ectopic
60 to 100, depending on the frequency of the PAC. premature atrial complexes Rate
within normal limits of .12 to .2 second. PR interval with premature atrial complexes measures
premature complexes occur in a rhythm, they interrupt the underlying rhythm irregular Rhythm
characteristic of the wandering atrial pacemaker rhythm The changing P wave configuration with at least three variations in one lead and the possibility of irregular rhythm
normal finding in children, older adults, and well-conditioned athletes and does not usually cause clinical signs and symptoms. Wandering atrial pacemaker
Multifocal atrial tachycardia (MAT) has P wave that changes from beat to beat.
MAT has a heart rate between 101 and 150 beats per minute
Atrial flutter has sawtooth atrial pattern between the QRS complexes.
Atrial flutter occurs when a rapid impulse originates in the atrial tissue
Automaticity the ability to initiate an electrical current.
Morphology Overall form and shape
J point A point on the QRS complex
Cardiac output The volume of blood the heart pumps each minute
Stroke volume The volume of blood ejected by one or more ventricles with each contraction
Vagal tone A condition in which tension on the vagus nerve causes variation in the heart rate
Hypotension A lower than normal blood pressure
Ischemia Occurs when there is a sudden loss or reduction in blood supply to a region of the heart tissue
Palpitations Fast heartbeat sensation felt by the patient
Syncope Loss of consciousness
Where does the electrical current start in the heart SA node
sinus arrest is sometimes referred to Sinus pause
medical assistant will observe what during a sinus arrest. PQRSTs
pause caused by the SA node Sinus exit block

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
