Rock Cycle

QuestionAnswer
rock cycle The series of processes in which rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geologic processes.
Cooling the loss of heat
Crystallize
Solidify or solidification When melted rock (magma or lava) cools and hardens into solid rock.
igneous rock
intrusive igneous Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth’s surface.
extrusive igneous Rock that forms from the cooling and solidification of lava at Earth’s surface.
Weathering The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by wind, water, ice, or plants. (can be physical or chemical)
Erosion The movement of broken rock pieces by water, wind, ice, or gravity.
Deposition When sediment is dropped and settles in a new place.
Sediment Small pieces of rock, sand, soil, or shells.
Compaction When layers of sediment are pressed together by the weight of layers above them.
Cementation When minerals stick sediment together like glue.
Mineral A naturally-occurring inorganic solid that is the building blocks of all rocks
sedimentary rock a rock formed from sediment that has compacted and cemented together in layers
heat Energy in a substance due to its high temperature
pressure the addition of force through pressing
metamorphic rock a rock that forms when an existing rock is changed through heat and pressure
melting
recrystallization The process where crystals reform because of heat and pressure
Lithification The process that turns sediment into rock through compaction and cementation.
Chemical weathering The breaking down of rock by changing what the rock is made of.
Physical weathering The breaking of rock into smaller pieces without changing what the rock is made of.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
