| umbo | the upper hump near the hinge of each shell |
| siphons | tube-like extension that flows in and out of the mantle cavity in bivalves and cephalopods. |
| Byssal threads | Strong fiber secreted by mussels for attachment. |
| biofouling | organisms that settle on the bottoms of boats, piling, and other submerged structures. |
| ink sac | dark fluid used to discourage predators. |
| pen | reduced thin shells of squids |
| crystalline style | an enzyme-secreting rod in the stomach. |
| open circulatory system | blood flows out of vessels into open blood spaces. |
| ganglia | clusters of nerve cells located in different parts of the body. |
| spermatophores | elongated packets of sperm. |
| veliger | a planktonic larva that has a tiny shell. |
