QuestionAnswer
What is an allegory? A story that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
What is analogy? A comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
What is an apostrophe? A form of personification in which the absent or dead are spoken to as if present.
What is a conjunction? A word that connects sentences and acts as a grammatical link to show relationships between ideas.
What is a deference? It is showing respectful submission to someone else's judgment out of respect.
What is figurative language? Using words or phrases in a non literal way to create an effect.
What is implicit? The underlying or suggested meaning of a text or statement without it being directly stated.
What is invective? It is harsh language that's used to criticize something.
What is a metonymy? It is the use of a closely associated word or concept to describe something.
What is parallel structure? It uses the same grammatical pattern in sentences for related ideas to create balance and clarity.
What is a pedantic? A story or character who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules.
What is ornate? Writing that is elaborate with complex vocabulary and rich imagery and uses many rhetorical devices to create a vivid picture.
What is a rhetor? A skilled writer who uses language to influence an audience and often appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos.
What is logos? A clear reasonable central idea and is seen as logical.
What is pathos? Appeals to emotions and interests of people.
What is ethos? An appeal by offering evidence and credibility.
What is a syllogism? A logical argument used to build a narrative, character belief, or theme. ( All mammals are animals. All elephants are mammals. Therefore, all elephants are animals.)
What is a cumulative sentence? It starts with a main idea (an independent clause) and then adds descriptive words that build upon it.
What is a declarative sentence? It makes a statement or declares a fact, and ends with a period.
What is an inverted syntax? A technique where the normal word order in a sentence is rearranged, with the verb often before the subject to create emphasis.
What is a periodic sentence? A complex sentence that withholds its main point (the independent clause) until the very end, building up suspense.
What does SOAPSTone stand for? Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, and Tone
What is an anaphora? A word or phrase that is repeated at the beginning of a sentence to create emphasis.
