Mitosis

QuestionAnswer
What is the first phase of mitosis? Prophase
What is the second phase of mitosis? Metaphase
What is the third phase of mitosis? Anaphase
What is the fourth phase of mitosis? Telophase
What is the term for the splitting of the cytoplasm to produce two identical daughter cells? Cytoskenesis
What are all the phases of the cell cycle? G1, S, G2, mitosis, cytokenesis
What term describes G1, S and G2? Interphase
What 3 steps happen in the Prophase? 1) Chromosomes condense 2) Centrioles move to the ends of the cell to form the spindle 3) The nuclear envelope breaks down and the chromosomes float free in the cytoplasm
What are centrioles? Bundles of proteins
What is the spindle? A network of protein fibres
What is the center of a chromosome called Centromere
What happens during the Metaphase? The chromosomes (each with 2 chromatids) line up along the spindle equator and attach by their centromere
What happens during the Metaphase checkpoint? The cell checks that all the chromosomes are attached to the spindle before mitosis can continue.
What is the spindle equator? The line along the middle of the spindel where the centromere attach during the Metaphase
What happens during the Anaphase? The centromere divide to separate each pair of sister chromatids. The spindles contract, pulling the chromosomes to the ends of the cell centromere first.
During which phase does cytokenesis start? The Anaphase
What happens during the Telophase? 1) The chromatids reach opposite poles on the spindle. They uncoil and are now called chromosomes again. 2) A nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes on opposite ends of the cell to form two nuclei
During which phase does cytokenesis end? The Telophase
What is a cleavage furrow? A fold that splits the cytoplasm.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
