| dyad | two members are mutually dependent on one another and if one leaves group, it no longer exists |
| triad | group of 3 |
| mediator | third person trying to resolve conflict |
| tertius gaudens | person who profits from disagreements |
| divide et impera | person who purposely breaks up the other 2 |
| small groups | face-to-face interaction, unifocal, lack of social arrangements, equality |
| parties | multifocal |
| large group | status differentiation |
| primary group | limited members |
| secondary | impersonal relationships |
| Asch Test | if majority of people agree on something then minority will go along with it even if they don't agree |
| in group | the powerful group, most often the majority |
| out group | the stigmatized or less powerful group, usually the minority |
| reference group | group that helps us understand or make sense of our position in society relative to other groups |
| social network | set of dyads held together by ties between individuals |
| tie | set of stories that explains our relationships to other members of our network |
| narrative | the sum of stories contained in a series of ties |
| embeddedness | degree to which social relationships are reinforced through indirect ties |
| strength of weak ties | relatively weak ties can be actually be quite valuable because they are more likely to provide new opportunities and information |
| structural hole | gap between network clusters that would benefit from having the gap closed |
| social capital | info, knowledge, of people or ideas and connections that help individuals enter preexisting networks or gain power from them. High amounts in community means they are tightly knit and can come together to face challenges |
| network analysts | use the basic concepts about groups and social networks to investigate how group life shapes individual behavior |
| organization | any social network that is defined by a common purpose and has a boundary between its membership and the rest of the social world |
| formal organizaiton | set of rules or governing structures |
| informal organization | no rules or governing structures |
| organizational culture | shared beliefs and behaviors within a social group |
| organizational structure | refers to the ways in which power and authority are distributed within an organization |
| isomorphism | constraining process that forces one organization to resemble other organizations that face the same set of environmental conditions |
