| culture | can be loosely defined as a set of beliefs, traditions, and practices. Everything but nature, not biological but passed down through communication |
| ethnocentrism | belief one group is superior to the other. We tend to view other cultures through a perspective of our own |
| material culture | everything that is a part of our constructed government, such as books, fashion, and monuments |
| nonmaterial culture | encompasses values, beliefs, behaviors, and social norms. Can take on form of ideology |
| ideology | system of concepts and relationships that include an understanding of cause and effect |
| cultural lag | a time gap between appearance of new tech and that of the words and practices that give it meaning |
| culture shock | doubt, confusion, or anxiety arising from immersion in an unfamiliar culture |
| code switching | the ability to flip fluidly between 2 or more languages or sets of cultural norms to fit different cultural contexts |
| cultural relativism | idea that we should recognize differences across cultures without passing judgment on them or assigning value to them |
| cultural scripts | modes of behavior and understanding that are not universal or natural, but have strongly shaped beliefs or concepts held by society |
| subculture | group united by sets of concepts, values, traits, or behavioral patterns that distinguish it from others within the same culture or society |
| values | moral beliefs |
| norms | the way in which values tell us how to act |
| socialization | the process by which a person internalized the values, beliefs, and norms of society and learns to function as a member of that society |
| reflection theory | culture is a projection of social structures and relationships into the public sphere |
| media | any formats or vehicles that carry, present, or communicate info |
| mass media | any form of media that reaches a mass amount of people |
| hegemony | impact of media on culture and how people and societies shapes, and are shaped by, the dominant culture |
| false consciousness | allowing people to become distracted and disenfranchised believing that social issues aren't that important |
| culture jamming | act of turning media against themselves |
