Evolution Change in genetics of a population that creates new life forms from a common ancestor.
Natural Selection Main reason for evolutionary change by inherited traits that help organisms survive and reproduce over generations.
Artificial Selection Humans intentionally choose organisms with desirable traits.
Variation individuals in a population must vary in some trait.
Mutation a random change in an organism's DNA that creates new genetic variation.
What are the 4 conditions for evolution through natural selection proposed by Darwin? 1. Variation 2. Inheritance 3. Differential survival and reproduction 4. Adaption
What is natural selection also known as? Survival of the fittest (greatest ability to survive and reproduce)
Examples of natural selection Rock pocket mice, lizards of different species, whale evolution
Examples of artificial selection Dogs, pigeons
examples of acquired traits Giraffe necks lengthening from reaching for branches.
Biodiversity life variety
Endemic Species found only in one area
Ecosystem Services benefits from ecosystems
Geologic time (deep time) all the periods of earth's history
Taxa levels of classification like genus and species
Phylogenetics the study of the evolutionary relationships among taxa
Homologous Structure character shared between species and their common ancesters
Species the basic unit of taxonomic classification
