TermDefinition
Central Nervous System Consists of the brain and spinal cord as it is the structural and functional center for the nervous system. Cells beginning in the brain or spinal cord but extend out through a nerve are not included in the CNS.
Parasympathetic Nervous System Known for the body's "rest and digest" response in the autonomic nervous system as it slows the heart rate and promotes energy conservation.
Autonomic Nervous System Responsible for the body's involuntary body functions such as heart rate, digestion, and breathing as these will occur automatically. It includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
Endocrine system Hormones are released by endocrine glands into the bloodstream to initiate a specific response from specific organs in the body. Growth and metabolism are some examples that are affected by the endocrine system.
Digestive system Starting with the mouth and ending with the rectum, the digestive system includes accessory organs that help aid in the process of the digestive system. Nutrients are absorbed in the digestive system as they are used by the body.
Respiratory system Involving the lungs and the circulatory system, this system is responsible for taking oxygen from the air and distributing it throughout the body. It also takes carbon dioxide, a waste product, and removes it from the body.
Circulatory system The circulatory system involves the heart as it circulates blood throughout the body and in the blood is oxygen from the respiratory system.
Lymphatic system This system involves organs such as the spleen, thymus, tonsils, and lymph nodes as they transport a fluid known as lymph. This system aids in the immune system with the body fighting against disease.
Sympathetic Nervous System Consists of neural pathways separate from the parasympathetic pathways. Known as the arousal system or part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for the body's "fight or flight" response.
Hormones These molecules are sent by the endocrine system to signal target cells for a specific response. An example would be when endocrine glands secrete hormones into the blood stream to reach target organs.
