Famous Psychologists

TermDefinition
Wilhelm Wundt considered one of the “Fathers of psychology” He established the first formal psychology laboratory in 1879. He was also the first person to refer to himself as a psychologist, further recognizing psychology as its own field.
William James Brought psych to the US and established functionalism. Additionally he wrote the well known book titled “Principles of Psychology" and he established the James-Lange theory of emotions.
John Locke He created the foundations for a lot of concepts that are still used in modern psychology. These concepts included things like Empiricism, his views on consciousness, and the idea of Tabula Rasa or “Blank slate” in reference to where the mind starts.
Sigmund Freud Psycho-analytical Psychologist who created the psychosexual stages along with Id, Ego, and Superego
Carl Jung Analytical Psychology, created the idea of personality archetypes and believed in the collective unconcious
Karen Horney Neo-Freudian who disagreed with Freud and created the idea of womb envy to counter the idea of penis envy
Carl Rogers Founder of Humanistic Psychology and created person centered therapy.
Albert Bandura Ran the Bobo doll experiment (Observational Learning) and also created the idea of Reciprocal Determinism in regards of personality
Abraham Maslow Humanistic Psychologist who created the Hierarchy of needs and the idea of self actualization.
Edward Tolman Did work on learning , run the maze running rats experiment which was contrary to Skinners of reinforcement.
Richard Lazarus Created Cognitive mediational theory and the daily hassles stress inventory
Walter Cannon Coined the term "Fight or Flight" and developed the idea of homeostasis
Hans Selye Coined the term "Eustress" and created General Adaptation Syndrome caused by prolonged stress
Ivan Pavlov Russian Physiologist who, through accidental experimentation with dogs created classical conditioning
B.F. Skinner Using the work of Edward Thorndike created Operant conditioning which uses reinforcement as a means.
John Watson Behaviorist who ran the Little Albert Experiment, a famous experiment in regards to Classical Conditioning
John Garcia Did work regarding tase aversion which is conditioning to dislike certain foods due to negative connotation - usually vomiting
Martin Seligman Known for the idea of positive psychology, and the benefits of optimism. Also created the idea of Learned helplessness
Edward Thorndike Created the "Law of effect" which paved the way for Skinner and operant conditioning.
Hans Eysneck Trait theorist who worked on personality and believed it stemmed from common factors or traits that people had.
