Oral Cavity mouth- makes saliva, mechanical digestion
▪ Pharynx food + air, back of throat, makes food bolus
▪ Epiglottis flap that covers windpipe when you swallow, not allowing food to go into trachea
▪ Esophagus mechanical disgestion, takes food to stomach
▪ Stomach makes pepsin which breaks down protien, acid causes chemical digestion
▪ Small Intestine absorbs nutrients
• Duodenum chemical break down and finishes breaking down food
• Jejunum absorbs nutrients
• Ileum absorbs nutrients
▪ Cecum mixes waste
▪ Large Intestine makes the waste hard
• Ascending Colon absorbs water and moves waste to right side of body
• Transverse Colon moves digested food to waste
• Descending Colon stores feces and moves it to the rectum
• Sigmoid Colon ▪ store waste from large intestine and absorb any more water left
Rectum stores waste
▪ Anus works as a sphincter muscle for waste
o Salivary Glands makes saliva
o Teeth breaks down food
o Tongue used for speaking and chewing
o Uvula closes off nasal passage
o Liver makes bile, breaks down lipids
o Pancreas makes insulin, bicarbonate, amylase, peptidase
o Appendix holds gut bacteria
• Sphincters makes sure anything that goes in cant come out
o Upper esophageal
o Lower esophageal (Cardiac) o Pyloric
