Chapter 8 Vocab
Electron Configuration and Periodicity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| electron configuration: | a list of the orbitals (in terms of sublevels, really) that are occupied; 1s^2, 2s^2, etc. |
| The Pauli exclusion principle: | No two electrons within an atom may have the same four quantum numbers; limits the occupation of any single orbital to a maximum of two electrons. |
| The aufbau principle: | Electrons will occupy the lowest energy orbital that they can enter |
| Hund’s rule: | Electrons in a sublevel containing more than one orbital will spread out among the orbitals with as many of their spins in the same direction as possible |
| shielding: | which describes the reduction in nuclear attraction due to repulsion by other electrons within an atom; attractive force felt by an outer electron is always less than that which would be felt if it wasn’t shielded from the nucleus by other electrons |
