QuestionAnswer
Concept statement A short written explanation of the main idea and focus of a design project. It explains the designer’s vision and sets limits for the design.
Active listening Carefully paying attention to the speaker, thinking about what they say, and showing understanding.
Presentation board A board or display used to show design ideas, drawings, and materials to clients or coworkers.
3D model A physical or digital model that shows length, width, and depth of a space or object.
Non-verbal communication Communication without words, such as facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, and body language.
Verbal communication Sharing information by speaking.
Written communication Sharing information using written words, such as emails, letters, or proposals.
Interior design process The step-by-step method designers use to plan, create, and complete a design project.
Pre-design The beginning stage when the designer talks with the client to understand needs before designing starts.
Programming Phase 1 where the designer gathers information about the client’s needs, problems, and goals.
Client program A written document that lists the client’s needs, requirements, and goals for the project.
Schematic design Phase 2 where the designer brainstorms ideas and creates rough drawings and layout options.
Design development Phase 3 where the chosen design is improved, detailed, and refined with materials and plans.
Contract documents Phase 4 where official drawings and written plans are created for construction and installation.
Contract administration Phase 5 where the designer manages and checks the construction and costs.
Move-in and post occupancy Phase 6 when the client moves in and the designer checks satisfaction after the space is used.
