TermDefinition
Aysmmetrical molecule A molecule with unequal amount of sharing
Bent when atoms are arranged in a curved shape when central atom has 1 or more ionic pairs. All bent molecules are polar
Binary compound A compound made of 2 or more substances
coordinate covalent bond where both electrons in the shared pair come from the same atom
covalent bond a bond where atoms share electrons causing different types of attractions
diatomic molecule a molecule made of 2 atoms bonded toghther
dipole a slight positive or negative charge by unequal sharing of electrons
dipole-dipole force when positive end of one polar molecule is attracted to the negative side of another molecule
dipole-induced-dipole force when a molecule with permanent dipole and a region of partial negative approaches no polar molecule
double covalent bond 2 bonds formed in an atom that shares 2 pairs of electrons
electronegativity how strong an atom pulls on electrons in a bond
hydrogen bond strongest type of dipole-dipole attraction. Hydrogen directly bonds with N.O.F
intermolecular force how molecules interact in between molecules
Ionic bond a bond between electrons where they are transfered, Nonmetal-Metal
linear when atoms are arranged in a line from a bond. can be polar and nonpolar
London Dispersion Force and Van Der Waals forces weaker force that occurs by temp shifts in electrons that produce momentary dipoles
Metallic bond the attraction between positive metal ions and there is a sea of electrons
molecule A covalently bonded atom
multiple covalent bond when there are many different bonds according to n atom and multiple electrons are shared
molecular covalently bonded molecules ( same thing as molecule)
non polar covalent bond electrons are being shared equally between atoms (ushally between 2 of the same atoms) it occurs due to the electronegativity being equal and cancelling out
polar covalent bond electrons are shared unequally due to one atom pulling on the electron more.
pyramidal 3 sided pyramid setup of molecule. The central atom is at the top and the 3 bonds happen at the base. Ushally always polar
symmetrical formula a symmetrical molecule setup
tetrahedral 4 atoms bonded to a central atom and its evenly spread out. Can be polar and nonpolar
triple covalent bond a bond that shares 3 pairs of electrons
vapor pressure the pressure created when molecules at the surface of a liquid escapes to a gas phase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
