TermDefinition
ACTIVE VOICE noun. The form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by its subject (subject + verb + object). The dog chased the ball. Is an example of active voice
CONTRIBUTE verb.To add or to give something to help support a specific idea or reach a common purpose. the staff who contribute to your sports pages are doing a splendid job
IMPLY verb.To strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated. nowhere in the abstract do the researchers imply a causal link
REINFORCE verb.To strengthen or support an idea, usually with additional material. The shipyard has already been asked to reinforce the stitching.
STANZA noun.A group of lines in a poem, often separated by spaces (the “”paragraph”” of a poem). The stanza continues the poem's play with the withholding of images.
ALLITERATION n.When the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence/phrase. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
ALLUSION n.A figure of speech in which a writer makes a reference to a famous story, person, object or event. He was a real Romeo with the ladies
HYPERBOLE n.An exaggeration to drive in a point. i'm so hungry i could eat a horse
IMAGERY n.Language that appeals to the senses to help the reader image a text or to experience an event like the authors. he sun dipped, painting the sky orange and pink
METAPHOR n.Compares two things that are not alike without using like or as. He has a heart of stone
PERSONIFICATION n.Gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas. The wind whispered secrets through the trees
SIMILE n.Compares two things that are not alike using like or as. he was as brave as a lion
SYMBOLISM n.Using objects, characters, actions, events etc. (symbols) to represent or signify something more profound or abstract than its literal existence The story was filled with religious symbolism
SUSPENSE n.when the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character’s motivation is It's odd, but it keeps you in suspense for what will happen next
FORESHADOWING n.a literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events/things that will happen in a narrative Even though it looked like rain, Carmen didn't take her umbrella to work.
LATIN SUFFIX -TION Action-Something that is done; the process of doing something he was killed in action
LATIN PREFIX SUS-/SUB- Suspense-Feeling unsure about someone or something; thinking something might be wrong. It's odd, but it keeps you in suspense for what will happen next
SUBCONSCIOUS n.Mental activity that occurs without someones being aware of it. your subconscious mind controls most of what you do
SUSPICION n.feeling of doubt or mistrust she had a sneaking suspicion that he was laughing at her
DESPISED v.hated; scorned She was despised as a hypocrite
DETERIORATION n.process of becoming worse there has been a worrying deterioration in his health
INTROSPECTIVE adj.thoughtful; inward-looking he grew withdrawn and introspective
REGRESSION n.return to a previous, less advanced state his mental state has shown a marked regression recently
COMPETENCE n.the ability to do something successfully or efficiently he changed the wheel with his usual competence
STAGNATE v.cease developing ; becoming inactive or dull No matter what you do, standing water is likely to stagnate
CONDUITS n.channels for conveying water or other fluids They're not content to simply be conduits anymore,’ says Mike Miron, CEO of ContentGuard.
TOIL v.work extremely hard or incessantly (can be a noun) After six and a half years of toil and sweat, I was finally done!
