Waves/Sound

QuestionAnswer
Wave A disturbance that carries energy through matter or space without transferring the matter.
Transverse Wave A mechanical wave in which the movement of the particles are parallel to the motion of the energy.
Trough The bottom part of a wave.
Medium A material through which a wave travels (liquid, solid, and gas)
Energy The ability to do work
Frequency The number of waves that pass a point in a given period of time.
Wavelength The length between crest to crest or trough to trough.
Mechanical Wave When a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate.
Longitudinal Wave A mechanical wave in which the movement of the particles are parallel to the motion of the energy.
Compression The particles are close together.
Vibrations The rapid motion of the particles of the elastic body or substances back and forth
Amplitude The distance the medium vibrates from the rest position.
Example of transverse wave light and electromagnetic waves
example of longitudinal wave sound wave or ultrasound wave
Relationship between wavelength, frequency, and pitch The more frequency the shorter the wave length and higher pitch.
Relationship between amplitude and volume The higher the amplitude the louder the volume is, However high or low the amplitude is, is how high or low the volume will be
How does frequency change light and sound? The frequency changes the sound because the more frequency the higher the pitch. The higher the frequency goes closer to the color blue and the less frequency, the color red.
Explain the relationship between amplitude and the brightness of light? However high or low the amplitude is, is how high or low the brightness of the light is going to be.
Explain why certain objects produce higher pitches and other objects produce lower pitches. Objects produce different pitches because the bigger the instrument the lower the pitch, like the different sized drums. The bigger the animal the lower the pitch. An elephant has a lower pitch than a dog does.
What impacts the size of the ocean waves? Why are there such huge waves off the coast of Hawaii and Northern Californina? Wind impacts the size of waves because the stronger the wind, the bigger the waves. Strong winds and open ocean affects the size of wind off the coast of Hawaii and Northern California.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
