Matter

TermDefinition
Atom The smallest particle into which a chemical element can be divided and still have the same properties.
Solid Matter in this state maintains a fixed volume and shape, with particles close together and fixed into place.
Liquid State of matter with a definite volume but no fixed shape.
Gas State of matter composed of molecules in constant random motion. This state has no fixed shape and will take on the shape of the space available.
Plasma State of matter composed of electrically charged molecules in constant random motion. This state has no fixed shape and will take on the shape of the space available.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Particle Theory of Matter / Kinetic Molecular Theory Theory that states how matter behaves (1. All matter is made up of atoms. 2. Particles are constantly in motion. 3. Particles attract each other. 4. Particles have space between them. 5. As temperature increases, particles move faster)
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Compound A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Element A pure substance made of only one kind of atom
Condensation The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Melting The change in state from a solid to a liquid
Freezing The change of state from a liquid to a solid
Evaporation The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas
Vaporization The change of state from a liquid to a gas
Deposition Change from a gas directly to a solid
Sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas
Pure Substance A substance made of only one kind of matter and having definite properties
Solute A substance that is dissolved in a solution
Solvent the substance in which the solute dissolves
Physical Change A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
Chemical Change A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily. Also called a mechanical mixture
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture (cannot see individual components). Also called a solution.
Physical Property a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Describes the physical appearance of a substance.
Chemical Property A characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. Describes the chemical structure of a substance

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
