Heredity Passing of traits from parents to offspring

Allele Different forms of a gene (individual letters)

Recessive An allele that is masked (covered up) when a dominant allele is present

Homozygous An organism that has two of the same alleles for a trait
Heterozygous An organism that has two different alleles for a trait
Human Genome complete sequence of genes in the human body
Genetic Engineering Process of making changes in the DNA code of living organisms
Gene A complex molecule that contains genetic information that codes for what traits an organism has
Gregor Mendel Father of genetics
Adenine (A) The base that pairs with Thymine (T) in DNA
Thymine (T) The base that pairs with Adenine (A) in DNA
Guanine (G) The base that pairs with Cytosine (C) in DNA
Cytosine (C) The base that pairs with Guanine (G) with DNA
double helix Shape of DNA
inherited trait A characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring.
