| mystery | a story in which a character needs to figure out who committed a crime |
| detective/sleuth | investigator who is trained to track down clues crime - a puzzle or problem that needs to be solved |
| plot of a mystery | the main purpose |
| crime | a puzzle or problem that needs to be solved |
| victim | character who was wronged, hurt, or killed in the story |
| witness | someone who may have seen the crime in progress or have knowledge of it |
| suspect | person who could have committed the crime |
| clue | pieces of evidence used to try and solve the crime |
| alibi | excuse or reason a suspect might use to prove their innocence |
| red herring | misleading clues to keep the reader in suspense |
| evidence | aka clue --bringing all the clues together to figure it out |
| motive | reason for committing a crime |
