How does the Earth move in space? (explain both rotation and revolution and how long each takes) Earth rotates on its axis (once every 24 hours) and revolves around the sun every 365 days (365 ¼ days).
What is the summer solstice? The Northern hemisphere tilted most towards the sun, get the longest hours of daylight. It happens around June 21.
What is the winter solstice? The Northern hemisphere tilted furthest from the sun, get the least hours of daylight. It happens around December 21.
What is an equinox? Both hemispheres get an equal amount of daylight, sun's rays are most directly at the equator. Happens around March 21 (spring equinox) and September 21 (fall equinox).
Describe the Western Region of North America. Where is it, what is the landscape like, and what plants or animals live there? Area west of the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific coastline. The landscape is rocky and mountainous, with areas of forest. Native plants include fir trees, and animals include elk, marmots, and black bears.
Describe the Great Plains Region of North America. Where is it, what is the landscape like, and what plants or animals live there? Large, flat grassland between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. The landscape is flat, grassy, and dry. Native plants include tall grasses, and animals such as bison and prairie dogs live there.
Describe the Canadian Shield Region of North America. Where is it, what is the landscape like, and what plants or animals live there? Large, flat, and rocky plateau in Canada surrounding the Hudson Bay. The landscape has many lakes and includes permafrost. Mosses and lichen grow in the Canadian Shield region, and animals like caribou and musk oxen live there.
Describe the Eastern Region of North America. Where is it, what is the landscape like, and what plants or animals live there? Located east of the Mississippi River to the Atlantic, this region features the Appalachian Mountains, the Atlantic coastal plain, and the Florida Everglades, home to diverse wildlife like alligators and herons.
Describe the Caribbean Region of North America. Where is it, what is the landscape like, and what plants or animals live there? Located in the Caribbean Sea, this region includes over 7,000 islands with landscapes ranging from volcanic mountains to sandy beaches, and coral reefs rich in marine life.
What is important or special about the Great Lakes? They contain over 20% of Earth’s fresh water. The largest group of lakes on Earth.
What is a cordillera? Where do they exist in North America? An extremely long chain of mountain ranges. The Rocky Mountains are a cordillera that runs all the way from Canada to Mexico.
What is permafrost? Where does it exist in North America? Permafrost is soil that is permanently frozen. It exists in the tundra region of the Canadian Shield.
What are some of the major natural resources in North America? (list at least 3 and where they can be found) Coal- Appalachian Mountains Oil- Canadian Shield, Great Plains Natural gas- Western Region, Great Plains Fertile soil - Great Plains (for growing crops) Precious metals- Western region, American Southwest
Where is Canada in relation to the United States? Directly north of the US.
What is special about the border between the United States and Canada? It is the longest border between two countries in the world.
How is the country of Canada divided into smaller parts? Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories.
What is the capital city of Canada? Ottawa
What are the two official languages of Canada? English and French
Which river forms most of the border between the United States and Mexico? Rio Grande River
Which four US states border Mexico? California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas
What is the capital city of Mexico? Mexico City
What kinds of land forms make up most of Mexico and Central America? Mountains, deserts, and rain forests
Which four major bodies of water surround Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands? Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico/America, and Pacific Ocean
