argument and claim important terms

QuestionAnswer
Ethos/ethical appeal Emphasizes the speaker's credibility
Pathos Appeals to the audience's emotions. Examples:personal story, powerful image, or sad videos.
Logos Appeals to the audience's logic or reason.Examples:data, historical events, facts, test results, and personal experience.
Claim the author's main point, a statement he or she believes to be true, must be arguable and provable.
Credibility The author is able to be believed and trusted.Look for the following:the author's credentials and background,where the article was published, and cited and reliable evidence used to support the claim.
argument when the author wants to convince you of their position.
evidence What the author uses to back up their claim.
counterclaim The author mentions the opposing viewpoint to disprove it.
rebuttal The author responds directly to the counterclaim.
