Why were Greek tragedies performed? At religious festivals to help the community.
What lessons do Greek tragedies teach? Fate, pride, and human limitations.
What offends the gods and pollutes the land? Murder and incest.
What restores balance after pollution? Ritual cleansing (catharsis).
What makes Oedipus noble? He is King of Thebes and saved the city from the Sphinx.
What is Oedipus’s hamartia (tragic flaw)? Hubris (excessive pride) and a quick temper.
What must a tragic hero gain at the end? Self-knowledge.
What emotional effect does a tragic hero create for the audience? Catharsis (pity and fear, then release).
Who is Oedipus? King of Thebes, unknowingly Laius’s murderer
Who is Jocasta? Queen, Oedipus’s wife and mother.
Who is Teiresias? Blind prophet who knows the truth.
Who raised Oedipus? Polybus and Merope, King and Queen of Corinth.
Who saved baby Oedipus? The Herdsman (shepherd).
Why is Thebes suffering at the start? A plague.
What does the oracle say must be done? Find and punish Laius’s murderer.
What ironic curse does Oedipus make? He curses the murderer, not knowing it’s himself.
What truth does Teiresias reveal? Oedipus is the murderer he seeks.
How does Oedipus learn his true identity? Messenger and Herdsman reveal he is Laius and Jocasta’s son.
What happens to Jocasta? She commits suicide.
What does Oedipus do after learning the truth? Blinds himself and asks for exile.
What does Oedipus say to show his pride? “I Oedipus whom all men call the Great.”
What curse does Oedipus invoke? He prays that he himself may feel the curse if the murderer lives with him.
What final wisdom does the Chorus give? “Count no mortal happy till he has passed the final limit of his life secure from pain.”
What theme is shown when Oedipus tries to escape destiny but fulfills it? Fate vs. Free will.
What theme is shown by Oedipus’s excessive pride? Hubris.
What theme is shown by Teiresias’s blindness vs. Oedipus’s sight? Sight vs. Blindness.
What theme is shown by Oedipus’s search for truth destroying him? Knowledge vs. Ignorance.
