Which document provided the first national government for the United States? Articles of Confederation
Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? It created a weak central govt. and gave the states too much power
What does "Consent of the Governed" mean? It means that people have the right to vote
What does "Rule of Law" mean? It means that even the President can be arrested
What does "Majority Rules" mean? It means more than 50% is needed to pass a law in Congress
What does "Individual Rights are Protected" mean? It means people have the right to pursue their goals without interference from the govt. Examples include the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
What does "Limited Government" mean? It means there is a separation of powers with 3 branches of govt., and Federalism (power split-states & national govt.)
What does "Representative Government" mean? It means we elect Senators, President, Governor
What type of government does the Constitution create for the United States? Democracy
What does "To form a more perfect union" mean? To make the country better than it was in the past (ex. abolition of slavery)
what does "Establish justice" mean? to create laws to maintain order and protect rights of citizens (ex. judicial branch)
What does "Ensure domestic tranquility" mean? to preserve peace within the US (ex. the police)
What does "Provide for the common defense" mean? to protect the country from all enemies (ex. military)
What does "Promote the general welfare" mean? to support the happiness and well-being of people of the US (ex. Bill of Rights)
What does "Secure the blessings of liberty" mean? to guarantee the US will always be free (ex. government upholding the US Constitution)

What is the two-step process to amend the US Constitution? Step 1- Proposed by Congress --> Step 2- Ratified by the states
What type of vote (fraction) is needed to amend the Constitution? proposed by ⅔ vote by Congress and a ratified by ¾ vote by state legislature to ratify (approve)
What are the 5 freedoms listed in the 1st Amendment? Religion, assembly, press, petition, and speech
What does Federalism (described in Article IV) mean? The states and federal governments share power
What does amend mean? to change the Constitution- 1st by proposing with ⅔ vote in Congress, then to ratify (amend) with a ¾ vote in state legislature.
What does preamble mean? it is the first paragraph of the Constitution that describes the structure of our govt.
What does "Separation of Powers" mean? A way the Constitution keeps our government from getting too much power is to divide the power among 3 branches of govt.
What does "Checks and Balances" mean? A way the Constitution makes sure no one branch of government gets too much power
