| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atomic Radius | The distance from the nucleus of an atom to the outermost electron (essentially the “size” of the atom). Trend: Decreases across and up |
| Electronegativity | The ability of an atom to attract electrons in a chemical bond. Trend: Increases across and up |
| Electron Affinity | The energy change when an atom gains an electron (usually in gas phase). Trend: Across and up is negative (more negative means more likely to gain) |
| First Ionization Energy | Energy needed to remove the first (outermost) electron from a neutral atom. Trend: Across increases and up increases |
| Second Ionization Energy | Energy needed to remove the second electron from a +1 ion. Always higher than First |
| n | Main energy level/ shell of an electron |
| l | Shape of the orbital |
| m1 | Orientation of the orbital in space |
| ms | Spin |
