Argument/Claim Terms

TermDefinition
Argument When the author wants to convince you of their position.
Claim The author's main point.
Evidence What the author uses to support their claim.
Counterclaim The opposite viewpoint of the author's claim.
Rebuttal When the author responds directly to the counterclaim.
Credibility The author is able to be believed and trusted.
Ethos Emphasizes the speakers credibility and authority. Authority conveys trustworthiness, expertise, shared values, etc..
Pathos Appeals to the audiences emotions. Pathos is used to influence the audience to be desired belief or action.
Logos Appeals to the audiences logic or reason. Logos uses any form or proof to influence an audience.
