Algebraic Terms

TermDefinition
Variable A letter that represents an unknown value (varies); can use any letter
Constant A term without a variable; numbers
Coefficient The number part of a term with variables
Term A term is either a single number or variable, or number and variables multiplied together. Terms are usually separated by addition and subtraction signs.
Like terms Two or more terms with the same variable or exponent.
Algebraic expression An expression with at least one variable and one operation.
Sum The answer of numbers being added together
altogether The amount of numbers all put together
How much more/less How much more you should add or subtract.
Difference The answer of a subtraction equasion
less than Subtract
Product The answer of a multiplication problem
of A sign of multiplication ONLY when it is In front of a fraction or percent.
Quotient The answer to a division equasion
per A term used for division
each Divide
Than/From Reverse the order of the expression.
Associative Property The way in which numbers are grouped when added or multiplied does not change the answer.
Commutative property The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answer.
Identity Property of Addition The sum of an addend & 0 is the same as the addend.
Identity Property of Multiplication The product of any factor & 1 is the same as the factor
Additive Inverse Property Adding a number and its opposite will produce a sum of zero.
Multiplicative Inverse Property Multiplying any number and its inverse (reciprocal) equals one.
Associative Property (x + 7) + 9 + x + (7 + 9)
Associative Property 4(3 x 9) = (4 x 3)9
Commutative Property (x + 7 ) + 9 = 9 + ( 7 + x)
Commutative Property 5 x 6 = 6 x 5
Identity Property of Addition x + 0 = x
Identity Property of Multiplication 6(1) = 6
Multiplicative Inverse Property 4 x 1/4 = 1
Additive Inverse Property -5 + 5 =0
Distributive Property 4(x + 3) = 4x + 12
Distributive Property 16 + 40 = 8(2 + 5)
