|---|---|
| Algebra | a branch of mathematics that uses mathematical statements to describe relationships between things that vary. For example, |
| Algebraic Expression | an expression which is made up of variables and constants, along with algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, etc.). For example, 2 × x is written as 2x. |
| Variable | a quantity that may be changed according to the mathematical problem. For example, x + 2 = 5 the x is being used as a variable. |
| Constant | a value that doesn't change. For example, 2, 5, 0, -3, -7, 2/7, 7/9 are all constants. |
| Coefficient | a number or an alphabet that is multiplied by a variable of a single term or the terms of a polynomial. For example, in the term 7x, 7 is the coefficient. The coefficient of x in the term 3xy is 3y. |
| Term | a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. For example, 3 + 8x - g + y^7 has 4 terms as 3, 8x, g, and y^7 are all separated by addition or subtraction. |
| Like Term | like terms are terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. For example, x, 4x, -2x, and 7x are like terms. |
| Sum | the result gained by adding numbers, objects, or things together. |
| Difference | the result of subtracting one number from another. |
| Product | the result of multiplying numbers together |
| Quotient | the number we get when we divide one number by another |
