Human Impact

TermDefinition
Force A push or a pull that can change how something moves or its shape.
Rotation When something spins or turns around a center point or axis.
Intensity How strong or powerful something is.
Physical change A change that affects how something looks or feels, but not what it is made of.
Glacial Having to do with glaciers or very slow movement, like how glaciers move slowly over land.
Weather condition What the weather is like at a certain time and place, such as sunny, rainy, windy, or cold.
Natural resource Something found in nature that people use, like water, trees, soil, or minerals.
Natural process A change or action that happens in nature without humans causing it, such as erosion or the water cycle.
Catastrophic Causing a lot of damage or destruction.
Cycle A series of events that repeat in the same order over time.
Atmospheric composition The types of gases that make up Earth’s atmosphere, like oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Environmental Having to do with the natural world, including air, water, land, plants, and animals.
Pollution Harmful materials or substances that make the environment dirty or unsafe.
Societal Having to do with people, communities, or how humans live together.
Renewable resource A natural resource that can be replaced or reused naturally in a short amount of time, like sunlight or wind.
Nonrenewable A resource that cannot be replaced quickly once it is used up.
Oil A natural liquid found underground that is used for fuel and to make many products.
Absorb To take in or soak up something, like water, heat, or light.
Wetland An area of land that is covered with water some or all of the time, like a swamp or marsh.
Agriculture The practice of growing plants and raising animals for food and other products.
Development When land is changed to build things like houses, roads, or businesses.
Fertile Having rich soil that helps plants grow well.
Groundwater Water found underground in the spaces between soil and rock
Industry Businesses or factories that make products or provide services.
Material world Everything around us that is made of matter, including natural and man-made objects.
Mineral A natural, nonliving solid found in Earth that has a specific chemical makeup.
River delta An area where a river meets a larger body of water and drops sediment, creating new land.
Aquifer An underground layer of rock or soil that stores groundwater.
Economic Having to do with money, jobs, buying, and selling.
Land usage The way people use land, such as for farming, housing, or businesses.
Levee A raised wall or barrier built to help prevent flooding from rivers.
Water usage How people use water for things like drinking, farming, or cleaning.
Consumption The act of using up resources like water, energy, or materials.
Land use management Planning and controlling how land is used to protect resources and meet people’s needs.
Conservation Using natural resources carefully so they last longer.
Preservation Protecting nature by keeping land or resources mostly untouched by humans.
Recycling Recycling
Perishable Something that can spoil or go bad if it is not used or stored properly.
Synthetic Made by humans using chemicals, not found naturally in nature.
Manufactured Made or built in a factory by people.
Rivers Large, flowing bodies of freshwater that move toward oceans, lakes, or other rivers.
Lakes Large bodies of water surrounded by land.
Groundwater Water found underground in the spaces between rocks and soil.
Fertile Having soil that is rich in nutrients and good for growing plants.
Delta Land formed at the mouth of a river where sediment is deposited as the river slows down.
Fossil fuels Fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas that come from ancient plants and animals.
Pollution Harmful substances that make air, water, or land dirty or unsafe.
Composition What something is made of or the parts that make it up.
Glacier A large, slow-moving mass of ice formed from packed snow.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up.
Concentration How much of a substance is mixed into a certain amount of another substance.
