QuestionAnswer
State (country) a country scaled by defined boundaries, has a permanent population, has a sovereign government, and is recognized by other states.
Nation-state A sovereign state that is made up of a homogenous population with one nation.
Nation A group of people with a shared history, shared culture, shared homeland, and desire to govern themselves.
Multi-National State A state that contains two or more nations that have agreed to coexist as one state.
Stateless Nation A group of people who share a collective identity and history, but who have no parcel of land that they fully control.
Compact state Having relatively equal distances from their center to any boundary, much like a circle. They are often regarded as efficient states.
Elongated state Have a long, narrow shape. The major problem with these states is with internal communication, which causes the isolation of towns from the capital city.
Prorupted states These states occur when a compact state has a portion of its boundary extending outward exceedingly more than the other portions of the boundary.
Perforated states Perforated states have other state territories or states within them.
Fragmented states Fragmented states exist when a state is separated. Sometimes, large bodies of water can fragment a state.
Landlock states These states lack a direction outlet to a major body of water, such as a sea or ocean.
Regime Government Type of power
Democratic Regime The government that receives its power from the people. Everyone eligible to vote has a chance to have their say over who runs the country.
Authoritarian Regime A System of government by one person with absolute power.
United Nations Nations that are united
NATO NATO was formed to counter the threat of the former Soviet Union.
Federal State The United States is a federal state because we believe in one strong central government.
Unitary State Has no strong central government.
Gerrymandering Manipulations of district boundaries.
The Kurds share a strong ethnic identity, language, and culture, and many have faced discrimination in the countries they live in
German Unification it was a unification made to a standard military.
Italian Unification Created by three people, Cavour, Garibaldi, and Mazzini, and brought the people together, and led an army to capture Sicily and southern Italy
Communism both an economic and political system in which property is owned collectively and labor is organized in a way that is supposed to benefit all people.
Theocracy a government ruled by a religious leader.
Constitutional Monarchy a government ruled by a king or queen whose power is determined by the nation’s constitution and laws.
Tyrant a single person who took control of the government against the wishes of the community.
